Here you can find very interesting summaries of very interesting articles I read online, or in magazines.
A Boy Adopted by Chimps
A disabled Nigerian boy is believed to have been adopted and raised by chimpanzees for 18 month. This child is now in the care of a children's home in Kano, Nigeria.
The boy was was named Bello, by the nursing staff. Bello was brought to them six years ago, by hunters, who found him with a chimpanzee family 150 kilometers from Kano.
Bello is mentally and physically disabled, and probably that's why his parent's abandoned him. He is believed to belong in a nomadic Fulani tribe.
Such abondonments of disabled children are common among this tribe, since they travel great distances, and in most instances the children die.
"We do not know exactly how long he would have been with the chimps. Based on the traits he exhibits, we estimate that he would have been adopted when he was no more than six months old and nursed by a nursing chimp," the welfare officer said.
When Bello was brought to the children's home he was about the size and weight of a four year old kid. He walked in a chimpanzee-like fashion, moving on his hind legs but dragging his arms on the ground, and stil today he leaps, chimpanzee-like, and claps his hands over his head repeatedly, cupping his hands, as monkeys do, and does not speak but makes chimpanzee-like noises.
Th staff are very fond of they boy, even if first he disturbed other children.
Isa Muhammad, the home's welfare officer, said staff had initially hoped that someone might come forward to claim the boy, but realized now that that was not going to happen.
The staff are trying to make the best of this situation, and take care fo him. They do not know for how long he will have to be in teh children's center.
NOTE: THIS ARTICLE IS REALLY OLD! BELLO WAS BROUGHT TO THE CHILDREN'S CENTER IN 1996.- I looked for more information about Bello on the internet, but could not find anything. If you have any information please e-mail it to me: p.panka@hotmail.com -thank you
